El cine de la comedia ranchera durante el socialismo a la “mexicana”

After the Mexican revolution, the west of Mexico turned into the cozy territory of nationalist iconography, el charro and la china. Philosophers, historians, archeologists, writers, painters and other intellectuals described what they thought to be characters of Mexican society and what characterized their identity. They found that the Mexican person was not very far from the caricature thought up by North Americans: wild, rowdy, alcoholic, bandit and player. Artists and filmmakers started portraying this image of the Mexican person located in different regions of the country. Films comprised a part of this interpretation and they formed the structure of the nationalist recital in ranchera comedies, which would later turn into Mexican westerns in the times when President Cárdenas implemented his project of “Mexican socialism”. This article looks for an explanation that allows us to understand why this film genre was born, in a historical context that was apparently not quite appropriate. It proposes that the government applied a negotiation strategy between the population and official organizations in order to introduce their modernization program. For this, they brought back folklore and combined it with the modernization discourse. In this manner, films are examples of the tension between tradition and modernity.Después de la revolución mexicana, el oeste de México se convirtió en el territorio acogedor de la iconografía nacionalista, el charro y la china. Los filósofos, historiadores, arqueólogos, escritores, pintores y otros intelectuales disertaron sobre lo que ellos creían era el carácter del pueblo mexicano y lo que caracterizaba su identidad. Encontraron que el mexicano no estaba muy lejano de la caricatura hecha por los norteamericanos: salvaje, camorrista, alcohólico, bandido y jugador. Los artistas, entre ellos los cineastas, comenzaron a pintar esta imagen del mexicano ubicada en diferentes regiones del país. La cinematografía formó parte de esta interpretación y creó la estructura del recital nacionalista en las comedias rancheras, mismas que se convertirían en los westerns mexicanos en el momento en que el presidente Cárdenas implementaba su proyecto del “socialismo a la mexicana”. Este artículo busca una explicación que permita comprender el porqué del surgimiento de dicho género cinematográfico en un contexto histórico, en apariencia, poco oportuno. Propone que el gobierno aplicó una estrategia de negociación entre la población y los órganos oficiales a fin de poder introducir su programa modernizador. Para ello recuperó el folclor y lo mezcló con el discurso de la modernidad. De esta forma, las películas son muestras de la tensión entre la tradición y la modernidad.
